Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program – How it Works
If you are a low-income family looking for housing in Fulton County then here is how the process works.
You will begin with an application process and will be placed on a waiting list. Once your name comes up on the waiting list you will be notified and a final application and screening process will take place.
Once the screening is completed the Housing Authority will present your family with a housing voucher. You can then begin your search for a unit of matching size to what was allotted to you in your application process.
After you locate your unit you will submit the required documentation for review. The housing authority will determine if the owner’s proposed rent is reasonable and that the family’s portion of the rent does not exceed the maximum 40% of your monthly income.
The unit will then be inspected.
Facts About the Housing Choice Vouchers Program
According to the HUD website:
The housing choice voucher program is the federal government's major program for assisting very low-income families, the elderly, and the disabled to afford decent, safe, and sanitary housing in the private market. Since housing assistance is provided on behalf of the family or individual, participants are able to find their own housing, including single-family homes, townhouses and apartments.
